A Season Too Far I （ラグビーまだやってます）

自分ではあまり気がついていなかったのですが、私はどうもアマノジャクらしいです。

家族の「お出かけ」に出発するまでは一番気乗りせず、腰が重かったりしますが、目的地に着くと一番はしゃいでいたりします。

かれこれ20年近くなるラグビーとのお付き合いにしても、この例外で無く、私はつい最近まで、

「オレ、ラグビーが好きだ！」

と口にして言うことには、憚りがありました。私の心の中ではあくまでも、

「いや～ほかにやりたいスポーツも無いし．．．」

というスタンスだったのです。

そんなわけで、昨シーズンの最終試合の後、夏のオフ・シーズンをニューヨークで過ごし、ヨガをちょっとかじった程度でなんもしていなかった私。口では妻に、

「いやぁ．．．オレももうラグビー引退だね．．．ワハハ．．．今度はゴルフだ．．．」

などといっていたのですが、香港に「帰港」した9月21日金曜日の翌日、22日土曜日にはもうラグビーしてました。

しかもまた2部リーグ．．．37歳のオジサンとしてはリーグのレベル落としたかったんだけど．．．。

9月22日

対HKCC（アバディーン）戦

ルース・プロップでスタートするも前半30分でリタイア。暑い．．．苦しい．．．ナサケネェ．．．

試合も大敗。

9月29日

対Valley戦

前半開始直後に立て続けにトライを決められ、「コリャ大敗パターンか．．．」と思ったら、持ち直し、なんと試合終了直前に逆転トライを決めて勝利。個人的には前週に比べてがんばったが、最後5分のところで「こむら返り」。リタイア．．．。ナサケネェ．．．

10月6日

対Dragons戦
昨シーズンの私の古巣チームが1部リーグからリーグを落としてきた。
同じクラブの2軍チーム。セオリーでは3軍チームである我々よりも強いはず。それでも何とか踏ん張り、接戦。惜敗。個人的にもやっとフル出場でチームに貢献できた。ヤレヤレ．．．。

そんなわけで、今シーズンもがんばります。目標は無故障。

どうやら私はラグビーが好きなようです。

My Sporting Jinx

My son has become a Yankees fan. He does not understand anything about baseball but cheers "Hip, Hip... Jorge!" and "Let's Go Yankees!" every time he sees that "NY" sign.

Amazing...

Steinbrenner and Cashman can be proud of the work they have done in my household.

As for myself, about a month ago I realised that Seattle Mariners had climbed to the top of the AL Wild Card race and I decided to support that team. After all, I might as well support Ichiro's team.

Since then, the Mariners hit the brake pedal in a big way, losing most of their games, including a 9-game losing streak. To top it all, I had to witness their meltdown against the Yankees on TV whilst my son went about the flat cheering "Let's Go Yankees!"

Call me crazy, but I think I have a knack for jinxing whichever sports team that I support.

And now, the rugby world cup has started in France.

And I am supporting Japan.

It was with a heavy heart that I made my way to Baker Street Pub here in New York on Saturday morning to see Japan play Australia in their first pool game. I couldn't stay sober and downed 3 pints of Guinness in the morning as my fellow countrymen (and several naturalised Pacific Islanders) went down 91 to 3. The fourth pint was on the house, thanks to a lovely Irish girl behind the bar.

As I walked back from the pub, my Guinness soaked brain was slowly being cooked by the bright daylight of New York's late-summer sunshine and the poem I had learned whilst I was in England started to swirl around in my ears...

You can tell that Waterloo may have been won on the playing fields of Eton but the myth was buried in the trenches of France and the era of professional sports has finally put a stake through its heart.

Title Tunes From British TV

どうしてなのかはわかりませんが、イギリスのテレビ番組のテーマ音楽にはいいものが多い気がします。ただ単に１１年間滞在して聞きなれているからだけじゃないと思うんだけど．．．

まずは大御所。ITV（民放局）のGranada製作、日本でもおなじみのジェレミー・ブレット演じるシャーロック・ホームズ・シリーズのオープニング。

渋いな～。実際に原作でも「ヴァイオリンが下手の横好き（ワトソン談）」と設定されているホームズ君をふまえたのかどうなのか、ヴィクトリア女王時代の爛熟したロンドンの雰囲気が伝わってきます。

ちなみに、ジェレミー君は若いときに「マイフェアレディー」でオードリー・ヘップバーンに恋するフレディー役をやってました。その話もまたいつか。

探偵つながりで、次はジェレミー君の演じるホームズ同様、「決定版」との呼び声高いデイヴィッド・スーシェ演じるエルキュール・ポワロ・シリーズのオープニング。

これまた渋い！１９２０年代、ジャズ・エイジを彷彿とさせるサックスのメロディーにアール・デコ調のバック。こちらも製作はグラナダでございます。

ジャズ・エイジとくれば忘れてはならない、２０世紀前半のイギリスを代表するコメディー作家PGウッドハウスの「ジーブスとウースター」のテレビ版。はしにも棒にもひっかからない金持ちのボンクラ、バーティー・ウースターと彼の万能召使いのジーブスを、当時まだ若手売り出し中だったヒュー・ローリーとスティーブン・フライが好演しています。

こちらもITVで放映されていました。

BBCからはコメディー・シリーズ、「オンリー・フールズ・アンド・ホーシズ（Only Fools and Horses）」のテーマ曲。

「オンリー・フールズ・アンド・ホーシズ」とはテーマ曲の歌詞中にもあるように、「（汗水流して働くのは）バカと馬だけさ」というコックニーの慣用句です。

私自身はイギリス滞在中、全然観たことないのですが、有名どころでは、次の「Eastenders」でしょうか。

いわゆる「ソープ・オペラ」と呼ばれる連ドラのたぐいですが、アメリカの場合「ダラス」とか「ディナスティ」などのように超金持ちのゴージャスな世界を舞台にした話が多いのに、なぜかイギリスでは世知辛い庶民の生活を題材にしたものばかりです。ここら辺にも国民性が現れているような．．．。

テーマ音楽でBBCが優れているのはスポーツ番組でしょう。まずは定番、総合スポーツ番組「Grandstand」のテーマ。

お次はサッカー専門番組「マッチ・オブ・ザ・デイ（Match Of The Day、最近では略してMOTD）」のテーマ。

グランドスタンドとマッチ・オブ・ザ・デイのテーマがハミングできれば、世界中どこのバーに行っても飲んだくれのイギリス人とお友達になれます。

こちらはもう少しお上品な「Wimbledon」のテーマ。

こちらは個人的なお気に入り、「Ski Sunday」

イギリス人選手がほとんど活躍していないスポーツなので、超マイナーな番組です。
